WHAT IS HALAL?

In Arabic, “halal” means “lawful” or “permissible”. In Islam, it encompasses a wide range of permissible activities, including food and drink, but also extends to ethical practices in business, finance, and daily life. In the context of food, halal refers to what is allowed for consumption according to Islamic law, with specific rules governing the slaughtering of animals and the preparation of food.

Permissible Foods: Halal food includes meats slaughtered according to Islamic guidelines, fruits, vegetables, and other food items that are not explicitly prohibited in the Quran.

Prohibited Foods: Pork, alcohol, and blood are generally haram (forbidden) in Islam, and therefore not considered halal.

Slaughtering: For a meat to be halal, it must be slaughtered in a specific way, which involves a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery, and windpipe, with the animal alive and healthy at the time of slaughter.

Certification: Many halal food products are certified by organizations to ensure they meet halal standards.

Broader Scope: Halal also encompasses ethical considerations beyond food, such as fairness, social justice, and the treatment of animals.

Known for its robust, slightly bitter taste, with cardamom adding a distinctive aroma and flavor.
Arabian coffee involves boiling water, adding finely ground coffee (often with cardamom), and simmering.
Traditionally served hot in small cups, with dates or other sweets as accompaniments.
Arabic coffee is more about the experience and social interaction than the caffeine kick.
While cardamom is a common spice, other spices like saffron or cloves may also be used.
While not as high as other coffee types, Arabic coffee still contains caffeine, although a cup contains only about 4mg.

Middle Eastern pastries are generally very sweet, often using honey, syrup, or sugar-based syrups.
Nuts like pistachios, walnuts, and almonds are commonly used as fillings or toppings in pastries like baklava and kunafa.
Various types of dough are used, including phyllo dough, semolina dough, and other specialized doughs.
Aromatic ingredients like rose water, orange blossom, and saffron are frequently used to enhance the flavor.
Middle Eastern pastries can have a variety of textures, from flaky and crisp to soft and chewy, depending on the type of dough and ingredients used.
